Our dear PDP faithfuls, as you are all aware our tenure as elected state executives ended yesterday 10th May 2020, accordingly, the National Working Committee(NWC) upon the expiration of our tenure directed that inline with Section 29(2)(b) and 31(2)(e) of our party’s constitution 2017 as amended, also approved the re- constitution of the present Exco as caretaker committee in order to avoid any vacuum pending when the state congress will be held.
Consequently, we wish to acknowledge and appreciate the amazing efforts, support and commitment of our leaders particularly our BOT members Sen Dr Jonah David Jang, Amb Fidelis NanmiapTapgun, Dist Sen Ibrahim Nasiru Mantu our 2019 governorship candidate Gen Sen Dr Jeremiah Timbut Useni, our senator Distinguished Sen. I. D. Gang our house of Representatives members Hon Beni Lar Hon Solomon Maren Hon Dr Simon Mwadkong, Hon Musa D Bagos, our house of assembly members Hon Peter Gyendyeng Hon Nanbol Listic, Hon Pirfa Ntyem, Hon Bala Fwanje, Hon Esther Dusu, Hon Fom Gwottson, Hon Musa A. We also wish to at this moment commend and appreciate all our loyal and committed party members across the state who have stood through thick and thin for the survival of our great party. Thank you for your resilience. We plead that all should remain calm and focused as we continue with the struggles that will unite all members.
We encourage members to join us in the struggles to build trust, unity and in mobilizing and educating Plateau people towards highlighting the ills of this government and assuring the populace that the future is better and brighter under the PDP led government.
We at this juncture appeal to all of us to set aside all personal differences and come together and work for the progress of the party As the past exco and now caretaker committee we are very much aware of complaints/petitions in some wards and LGA’s. These issues will be viewed holistically in the spirit of fairness, justice, peace and reconciliation. Our main focus now is to have dedicated, selfless and visionary minds to move our party forward.
In the meantime continue to observe the social distancing regulations, wear your face masks and always wash your hands with soap under a running water. COVID-19 is real, let us together stop the spread.

GOVERNOR LALONG INSPECTS BOUNDARY ROUTES; WARN SECURITY AGENCIES AGAINST COMPROMISE.
Worried by the continuous violation of the closure of all boundary routes into Plateau State which has been identified as a major source of importing COVID-19 into the State, Governor Simon Bako Lalong on Monday 11th May 2020 visited some boundary entry points to assess the situation. Governor Lalong was at the Forest-Hawan Kibo boundary point in Ryom Local Government area which is one of the major entrance routes to the State from FCT, Nasarawa, Kaduna and other parts of the country. The Governor addressed the security personnel at the boundary where he expressed displeasure over the fact that the orders issued by the State and Federal Governments are not being carried out effectively as people still enter the State despite the closure order. He said “We have given the order that no vehicles should come into the State while trucks should not pass this boundary once it is 6pm, even if it is exempted from the movement restriction. I see from the CCTV how these trucks pass and this must stop. I am warning the officers and men here to be more diligent, or face the consequences. You have made sacrifices to assist Government contain COVID-19, please don’t allow few among you to spoil your good work and integrity”. Chairman of Ryom Local Government Mafeng Gwolson told the Governor that the border has been reinforced while illegal routes are also being addressed adequately through community engagement. Along the way, the Governor intercepted some motorists for violating the movement order and non use of face masks. He counseled them and then directed security agencies to ensure they are made to comply with Government directives. When he visited the Ganawuri-Manchok boundary route, Governor Simon Lalong again emphasized the need for strict adherence to the boundary closure in order to curb the transfer of the disease from other States and within Local Governments. He also visited the Jingre-Saminaka boundary post in Bassa Local Government where he directed that all illegal boundary routes should be blocked with concrete barriers such as the one identified near the NNPC Depot on Zaria road. He also directed the Local Government Chairman to engage the community leaders and also liaise with the NURTW to ensure that the trucks at the boundary are evacuated and strict compliance to boundary closure enforced. Lalong said “The rising cases in the State with origin from other States demand that all hands must be on deck to curtail importation and also deal with the community spread from existing cases which are 17 as at 9th May 2020”. He also visited one of the mobile courts in Jingre where he commended the Magistrates for working tenaciously to safeguard the lives of the citizens through addressing violations of government directives. The Governor was also at the Ryom General Hospital which has been designated as a treatment centre for COVID-19. He was briefed on the few modifications required to make the facility suitable by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nimkong Lar. On return to Government House in Rayfield, the Governor inspected a handwashing machine produced by one of the leading innovators in Plateau State, Engr. Jerry Mallo.

There are real challenges to isolation or quarantine or lockdown, or whatever the government has called what we are all experiencing these days. How do we stay joyful during lockdown? Is it even right to feel joyful when the Corona virus has brought such devastation, hardship and grief to so many people? These are the questions I’ve been pondering upon myself ever since knowing that the persistant Coronavirus period is going to test our joy. I’ve to turned to the Bible for answers, trying to uncover why it is important to maintain our joy in these uncertain times. As a people of hope and faith, we are to believe and put into practice the scriptures which admonishes us to give thanks in all circumstances and to rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice.
1) Thus, we can be joyful if we remember that Joy is a Fruit of the Spirit. Scripture tells us that joy is one of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Generally, we’re happy when things go well and unhappy when they don’t. Joy, on the other hand, is not dependant on our circumstances. Even as the early church faced opposition and persecution, we read, “And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 13:52). Their joy didn’t flow from ideal conditions. It flowed from their relationship to Christ through the Holy Spirit. We too live in very adverse circumstances as the Covid-19 virus causes havoc to healthcare systems and economies around the world. Let us learn from the early Christians that we can experience Christ’s joy in the midst of turmoil. We do this by staying connected to him. 2) We can have joy if we remember that Joy is a way of Witnessing our Faith. “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near” (Philippians 4:4-5). Since joy is a fruit of the Spirit, it is also a mark of our discipleship. This is one of the reasons Paul urges the Philippians to be filled with joy as a witness to those around them. Even with the escalating spread of the Pandemic as Christians we have an opportunity to witness to a world caught in the grip of fear and uncertainty. Our joy at so odd time, with what the rest of the world feels right now may cause those around us to stop and wonder what makes us so different. 3) Remember I am not saying that Joy will Deny us of our Feelings. God has given us emotions for a reason. Emotions such as fear and even anger are the warning lights that our hearts require us to look up to heaven where our help comes from God who makes Heaven and the Earth. In these emotional times let’s pay even closer attention to our feelings. The feeling (warning light) is not wrong but we must be careful how we react to it. We must not allow our fears to drive us to panic, obsessive worrying or impatient and practice unkind behaviour. Doing so, will affect our relationship with Christ and steal our joy and peace. The right reaction is to take our feelings to God in prayer. Bretheren as we continue another week of lockdown with relaxation in some States, let us pray for the States which are hard hit by COVID-19, comfort for families of deceased Coronavirus victims and recovery for the quarantined. Let us reduced the rate of spread and casualties by keeping to proactive measures laid down by medical and health personnel. Relaxing the lockdown MUST NOT be misused in the pretence of seeking daily bread. The 2nd and 3rd stanzas of hymn; “What a Friend we have in Jesus” is reassuring;
2) Have we trials and temptations? (Yes we do) Is thererouble anywhere? (Yes there are). We should never be discouraged, Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful. Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness, Take it to the Lord in prayer. 3) Are we weak and heavy-laden, (Yes we are) Cumbered with a load of care? (Certainly) Precious Savior, still our refuge— Take it to the Lord in prayer; Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? (You may not have gotten palliative and feel forsaken) Take it to the Lord in prayer; In His arms He’ll take and shield thee, Thou wilt find a solace there. Let us pray for the Bayos, Bassa LGA and general security of the state and country during and after the lockdown. Have a Coronavirus free week in Jesus name. As the adverse effects of the coronavirus pandemic continue to affect social, economic, religious and political activities, a group of female Health Professionals in various Health Institutions in Plateau State under the auspice Plateau Female Nurses in Politics today extended humanitarian intervention to House of Recap situated at #26 Liberty Dam Road, British-America Junction Jos Plateau State to cater for the welfare of the orphans, less privileged and vulnerable as palliatives to cushion the effect if COVID-19. The event coincided with the Mothers’ Day celebration.
Leading the delegation, the President of the Group, Nrs Florence Ishaku Angashan said the gesture was borne out of their desire to alleviate the hardships being faced by Children at this difficult time.
She said though times are hard, they deemed it fit to provide for the needy in their little way.
Nrs Florence said the group targeted the centre because of the hardship being faced by the Children there and as Mothers, they were touched to reach out and meet some of their physiological needs.
She charged management of the centre to ensure they train the children on the need to observe good personal/respiratory hygiene to avoid exposure to COVID-19 as well as adhere strictly to all preventive measure laid down by health professional to stem COVID-19. The group also carried out awareness campaign to the organization.
Receiving the items on behalf of the organization, Nrs Sarah Peters appreciated the group for identifying with the orphans, less privileged and vulnerable in the orphanage in the centre. While commending their humanitarian gesture, she described them as women with good and caring hearts. She prayed God to reward and replenish them for the kind gesture. She also called on government, NGOs, other professional bodies and well spirited individuals to emulated the group.
She said the orphanage presently has 156 orphanages, less privileged and vulnerable who are all children.
They were later taken round the facility where they assessed same for possible future intervention where they prayed before departure.
House of recap was established in 2013 and has been assisting children majority of which are internally displaced persons from the northeast of Nigeria. The children are drawn from Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, and Plateau State of Nigeria.
The Orphanage is taking care of orphans, less privileged and the vulnerable spiritually, physically, educationally and morally.
The items donated were bags of rice, beans, maize, garri, clothes and soaps.
PLATEAU STATE GOVERNOR SPEAKS OF RISING COVID-19 CASES; VOWS TIGHTER ENFORCEMENT OF REGULATIONS TO CUT COMMUNITY SPREAD.
As Covid-19 cases in Plateau State rise to 17, with one discharged, Governor Simon Bako Lalong is asking citizens of the State not to panic, but to continue to strictly adhere to regulations put in place to contain the disease and curtail community spread. Governor Lalong while responding to the rise in the number of cases said the development calls for concerted efforts to achieve effective contact-tracing and stop community spread which is now the major challenge. He said, “My message to the people of Plateau State is to commend them for complying with the regulations we put in place. If we had not taken the steps we adopted, the situation will have been more worrisome. This is the time to concentrate on contact tracing to be able to ascertain the magnitude of the pandemic on our people. The best thing is to check and address it instead of sitting and arguing. Already, the index case has been treated ad discharged while the others are doing well.” He urged citizens of the state to continue to comply with the guidelines for restriction of movement, use of face marks, adhering to social distancing and observing hygiene and sanitation requirements. “We are now going into aggressive enforcement of the regulations we rolled out as that is the best way for us to contain the rising cases. From all the cases we have, there is none that originated within the State. All of them are from people who sneaked into the State from our borders despite the closure. We will not allow this to continue especially at this time that we are doing contact tracing and working hard to curb community spread,” he said. Governor Lalong also described as unfortunate the situation where some people violate laid down regulations aimed at tackling the virus and try to persuade others to disregard Government directives on the claim that covid-19 is not real. “It is sad and unfair for people to take this position and try to instigate others to disregard our regulations. Covid-19 is real and for me, I lost two friends recently, one in Lagos and the other in Bauchi. They were both classmates and lawyers. Let us not put people at risk by not only being careless, but discouraging them from doing the right thing. I appeal to our people to take serious precaution and stay at home while observing all the regulations”, the Governor said. Lalong also reminded the citizens of the State that the total lockdown in the State earlier relaxed resumes midnight of Sunday 10th May 2020, and violators will be arrested and prosecuted. He also reiterated that all exempted motorists coming into the State will not be allowed in after 6pm until the next day 7am when they will be thoroughly screened and certified before entry.

Ex-Rep in letter to Buhari links deaths to COVID-19, demands probe Only 30 died, cases unconnected to coronavirus –Deputy gov Deaths may be over 300, say indigenes, Katagum District Head confirms 110 Our Reporters
There was controversy on Saturday over an alleged huge deaths of about 110 persons in Azare town, headquarters of Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State, within the past two weeks.
The drama began when a former member of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Mohammed Baba, raised the alarm in a letter to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), informing him of the death of over 100 persons in the town in the last one week.
The letter was obtained by Sunday PUNCH on Saturday.
Baba, who confirmed to one of our correspondents that he wrote the letter, claimed that the deaths were due to the outbreak of coronavirus in the town. The outbreak, he said, resulted in over 100 fatalities, “throwing the entire area into great mourning, panic and confusion.”
The former lawmaker served between 2015 and 2019, reelected in 2019 but removed by the Elections Petitions Tribunal. He also said about 286 persons were allegedly buried at the Azare cemetery in the last two weeks, adding that anyone in doubt should visit the cemetery to verify his claim.
He said, “If you go to the graveyard, they have a register there and you would see it yourself. In the last two weeks, they registered more than 286 bodies at the Azare graveyard. The normal death rate in the town was about one to two per day, so you have to raise the alarm when you are burying 200 to 300 persons in two weeks and over 100 per week. Our people are dying, do we have to keep quiet?
“We are not blaming anybody; this is a pandemic, we are just asking the government to take further action. The Federal Medical Centre there is doing well; they have over 20 people in isolation there. It’s a case of community transmission like the one in Kano.
“Go to the Federal Medical Centre isolation centre and ask them how many people they have there within two weeks. When Justice Dahiru Saleh died, the record was around 236. If you go to the Azare cemetery, the register is there. What we are trying to do is to inform the government to do the needful. We are asking for a testing centre and other measures the government can deploy to give palliatives to people.”
In the letter titled, ‘Massive COVID-19 outbreak in Azare: Request for urgent action’, Baba, who once represented Katagum Federal Constituency, requested the President to intervene urgently.
The letter partly read, “The centrality and proximity of Azare to Bauchi, Kano and some major cities of Jigawa State makes the town’s large population susceptible to the virus due to the already existing large cases of the disease in those areas.
“And because media coverage is always largely skewed towards states capitals and other more prominent cities, the ongoing horrific situation in Azare has not got the attention it deserves, and that is why I want to use this privilege to appeal to you for urgent action to arrest the unpalatable situation.
“Consequently therefore, I wish to appeal to Your Excellency to direct the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 to urgently reach out to Azare town with all the necessary facilities and palliatives to assist the communities there.
“And to help in this expected effort, may I draw your attention to the fact that an Opthalmology unit and laboratory have already been built and equipped by the Central Bank of Nigeria at the Azare Federal Medical Centre since 2013 but have not been inaugurated and put to use till now.”
Meanwhile, the total number of cases in the state rose to 161 following the addition of the 44 new cases detected on Saturday.
Overall, there were 239 new cases in the country on Saturday, pushing the total cases to 4,151. Number of deaths increased to 128 while 745 persons have so far been discharged.
Katagum district head confirms 110 deaths
But, when contacted, a member of the Katagum Emirate Council and District Head of Katagum, Usman Mahmood Abdullahi, told Sunday PUNCH in a telephone interview that there had only been 110 deaths and no evidence to link the deaths to COVID-19.
He said, “We have one major burial ground in Azare and the information available to me is that from the time we started our fasting (April 24) till date, we have buried 110 persons. When I asked the graveyard managers, they told me the average death is between 10 to 12 in a day, even without this COVID-19. So, from the look of things, we didn’t even meet the average because if you look at it, we only have 110 deaths within 15 days. And the number is falling.
“Secondly, I’m in touch with the FMC where the isolation centre is. I don’t know how he got his information. We have a register at the graveyard and anybody can go and check. The information I gave you is from the available register.”
Asked if the deaths could be due to COVID-19, he said, “No, because I’m not a medical doctor. About four to five of them who died recently were over 85. So, it’s a normal
Deaths may be over 300, say indigenes
However, in a different but related twist to the controversy, a Peoples Democratic Party candidate from Azare/Madangala constituency for the House of Assembly election in the last general elections, Musa Azare, in an open letter to Governor Bala Mohammed claimed that as of Thursday, there were over 301 fresh graves dug at the Azare cemetery in the last 14 days.
He said what was more worrisome was the way people accompanied the corpses for burial, pointing out that it was in violation of government’s directives and protocols.
He added, “Information reaching me from Azare says that as at yesterday there were 301 fresh graves in the Azare cemetery, dug in the last 14 days. I have verified this information from multiple sources.”
Azare said that there was the need to intensify awareness among the people, advising the indigenes to be more cautious in the face of the pandemic.
He said, “And to our people, you better wake up and accept the reality of what the whole world is going through. This deliberate ignorance and reckless scepticism will not do anyone any good. In fact, it is part of the reasons why we are witnessing more and more deaths. And truly, it amounts to us killing ourselves.”
In a related revelation, an indigene of Azare and Secretary of the Muhammad Dankauwa Horse Riders Association in the town, Mr Umar Farouq, said over 300 people had died in the community.
He said it was sad that no tests were being carried out to determine the cause of the deaths.
He said, “Most of the people who have died were aged 60 and above. Since April 24 when Fatima Adamu, the mother of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, died in Azare, we have been seeing more deaths.
“About 300 persons have died in Azare now. No autopsy has been carried out to determine what killed them and we have been living as if nothing is going on.
“We are scared because most people living in Azare are like a family. We need a COVID-19 testing centre to determine what’s going on.”
Another indigene, a teacher who lives at Azare, Mr Inuwa Umar, also told one of our correspondents on the telephone that in the past two weeks, over 300 persons had died in the community.
“In the past few days, almost every day when I open the social media or go to the mosque, there have been announcements of people who died from illness. Both the prominent and ordinary residents have died,” he said.
Umar said he was afraid that Azare might be experiencing the deaths due to its proximity to Kano, saying over 30 buses usually left Azare for Kano every day.
Kano is an epicentre of the COVID-19 in the North-West, with 576 cases as of Saturday. The state also recently experienced a series of what residents tagged ‘mysterious deaths,’ which were later found out to be COVID-19 related.
Umar said, “I think the situation might be as a result of what is happening in Kano. We have strong economic ties with Kano. Over 30 buses go to Kano from our town daily, which means that anything that happens to Kano people might easily happen to us.
“Even during the lockdown, you would be surprised to see the number of people travelling to Kano for business. Our people know the routes to get to Kano.
“The people dying are mostly aged 60 and above. The deaths are rampant, I’m telling you. There is a central cemetery here at Azare where they are burying the deceased. It’s so bad here that even yesterday (Friday), our former House of Representatives member wrote a letter to the President that we need his attention. We don’t know what’s happening and we are really scared.”
‘Magnitude of deaths unprecedented, causing panic’
Also, the Damajen Katakum (District Head), Bashar Kabir, told one of our correspondents on Saturday that the magnitude of deaths had caused panic in Azare, with many linking them to COVID-19.
Kabir stated, “There were series of deaths but nobody can confirm they were (caused by) coronavirus. Only the medical workers can confirm that. But I know there were a series of death over the past two weeks and the magnitude has been unprecedented; it’s high this time around. That is why people are linking it to coronavirus.
“There is panic. People that used to go there (Azare) cannot go because of the fear of the unknown. There are people that go there regularly, but now they cannot go because of that.
“What I heard was that a former member of the House of Representatives wrote to the President, through the SGF (Secretary of the Government of the Federation) asking them to intervene. And I learnt that the deputy governor was there with the state team to assess the situation, but I don’t know the outcome,” he added.
He also said that though efforts were ongoing to sensitise the villagers to the need to protect themselves from contracting COVID-19, most of the residents doubted the existence of the virus.
“What the former member of the House of Representatives did was the right thing. He wrote the Federal Government, through the SGF, asking them to please send a team,” he added.

Only 30 died, cases unconnected to coronavirus – Deputy gov
Meanwhile, the state government has denied the reports of mass deaths in Azare, saying only 30 people died. It also dismissed the insinuations that the deaths were related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at a press conference at the Government House on Saturday, the state Deputy Governor, Baba Tela, who is also the Chairman of the state Rapid Response Task Force Committee on COVID-19 and Lassa Fever, said, “It is a seasonal thing in the area especially during the hot season when people with underlying illnesses get complications which always lead to their deaths.”
Tela, who is also from Azare, however, explained that what is happening in Azare is a spillover from Kano considering its proximity to Kano and Jigawa states where mysterious deaths had been recorded.
He gave the assurance that medical experts were working round the clock to ascertain the cause of the deaths.
One death recorded in Azare
While giving an update on the coronavirus disease in the state, the deputy governor said, “So far in Azare, only one person died of COVID-19 while receiving treatment at the FMC, Azare. As of Saturday, May 9, only 26 patients are on admission at the FMC having tested positive for COVID-19 and receiving treatment while a few others have been quarantined awaiting the results of their test.”
He said the state government was doing everything possible to reduce the number of infections in the state, noting that facilities at the FMC Azare would be expanded to ensure that the infection was contained.
12 medical officers infected with COVID-19 in Bauchi – Commissioner
The Bauchi State Commissioner for Health, Dr Aliyu Maigoro, has also said 12 medical officers in the state have been infected with the coronavirus disease.
Maigoro, who made the disclosure at a news conference on Saturday in Bauchi, however, said that no death had been recorded so far amongst all the affected medical officers.
He said, “As of today, we have 12 medical officers in the whole of Bauchi State who have been infected with COVID-19. Six of them are in Azare, while others are in Bauchi.”
He said the state was on the alert to avoid the escape of COVID-19 patients.
Meanwhile, the Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Azare, Dr Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the cases of strange deaths were not reported to the hospital.
Abdullahi, who spoke to one of our correspondents in a telephone interview, said the hospital had only recorded one COVID-19 related death and no record of alarming mortality in recent times.
He said, “As far as the Federal Medical Centre in Azare is concerned, we have not witnessed an increase in the pattern of mortality in our hospital. In truth, we have had only one death from COVID-19. She was an elderly woman, aged about 80. She came to the hospital and we tested her and she was COVID-19 positive before she died.
“We are managing the other confirmed cases while others are still awaiting the outcome of their test.”
Asked specifically about the strange deaths, he said, “The truth is that in the community there are deaths but any death that happened in the community and not brought to the hospital is under the jurisdiction of the local government and the National Population Commission to take care of, I mean any increase in statistics.”

FORMER NIGERIA AMBASSADOR TO THE NETHERLANDS, PROFESSOR MARY LAR TURNS 85 TODAY.
On this day in 1935, a Nigerian educationist, proprietress of schools and NGOs, a philanthropist and Professor, Amb. Mrs. Mary Nanwor Lar was born in Langtang North, Plateau State, North-central Nigeria. She rose from a primary school teacher to a professor at the university.
She became an Ambassador of Nigeria to the Royal Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2003. She has nurtured, groomed and brought up several children across Nigeria in addition to her biological children and is also a grandmother to many.
As a devout Christian, she raised her children in the ways of the Lord and instilled discipline in them all.
Her children are accomplished variously in the field of medicine, law, sciences, economics and politics.
Married to Chief Solomon Daushep Lar of blessed memory, the first executive Governor of Plateau State, she’s blessed with four children, they are Dr. Chalya Lar, Hon. Beni Lar , Barr. Mandam Mark Lar(of blessed memory) and Dr. Deborah Lar –Ihejirika and many grand Children.
