TEXT OF THE JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE BY THE LEADERSHIPS OF THE PLATEAU STATE YOUTH COUNCIL, COALITION OF PLATEAU STATE INDEGENOUS YOUTHS AND YOWICAN, ON BEHALF OF ALL PLATEAU YOUTHS, ON THE RENEWED KILLINGS AND FULANI ATTACKS IN MANGU, BARKIN LADI, BOKKOS, JOS SOUTH, RIYOM and BASSA LGAs OF PLATEAU STATE ON SATURDAY, APRIL 29TH, 2023.

Protocol

Good morning gentlemen of the Press and welcome to this all important Press Conference.

It has come to the notice of the above mentioned coalition that Fulani militias have resumed and are also planning coordinated attacks and killings in Mangu, Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Jos South and Bassa LGAs of Plateau State.

These attacks are orchestrated largely to disrupt farming activities, economic livelihoods, displace population and grab lands in these commuties.

From April 15th, 2023 to date, the following villages and Hamlets have come under attacks, our people killed, properties worth millions of Naira destroyed while others have been displaced from their ancestral homes.

For the Records,

1: MANGU LGA;

a. Murish, Mai-tumbi and Jwak villages were attacked on the 15th and 16th of April, 2023, and 4 people were killed.

b. A mining site in Mangor was attacked and five people were killed on the 12th April, 2023.

2; BARKIN-LAD LGA

a. NTV village, 2 people were ambushed and killed on the 17th April 2023.

b. Rawuru, 1 person was ambushed and killed on the 22nd April, 2023.

c: In Tapo of Heipang, 4 people were killed on April 23rd, 2023.

d. In Heipang-Kwi road (Chit), two people were ambushed and killed on the 27th April, 2023.

3; RIYOM LGA

a. In Wereng, it was a case of massive willful destruction of farmlands on the 22nd of April, 2023.

b. Kuru Station of Wereng, 2 people were killed on the 23rd April, 2023.

c: In Rim- Bachi road, 3 people were ambushed and 2 fatally injured on the 23rd April, 2023.

d. In Jol, it was a case of willful destruction of farmlands on a massive scale and one person was ambushed, robbed of his motorcycle and abducted on the 24th and 25th April, 2023 respectively.

e. In Wereng Camp-Darwat road, 2 two clergies were ambushed and 1 fatally injured on the 24th April, 2023.

f. In Gako-Rim, one person was killed on the 26th April, 2023.

4; JOS SOUTH

a. In Turu (Farin Lamba), 6 people were killed and 1 injured on the 25th April, 2023.

5; BOKKOS LGA

a. In Marish, 3 people were attacked and killed.

The afforementioned attacks are in addition to the many attacks that have taken place in several villages in Bokkos, Riyom and Bassa LGAs.

The above incidences are sufficient evidence that the Fulani militias have resumed their onslaughts on the innocent people of Plateau state just like it has been happening in parts of Southern Kaduna and Benue state. In our view, these attacks should never be mistaken for isolated incidents or better still, the so-called farmer-herder clashes. Rather, they are strategies of war and terrorism aimed at disrupting farming activities, displacing the people and grabbing their lands.

Unfortunately for the victims in all these villages and Hamlets of Plateau State, the response of security agencies, particularly the Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) has always come too late and too little to save their lives and situation despite the early warning signals sent to them by members of our coalition.

Today, these people have lost their lives, their dreams and aspirations in life cut short while their responsibilities over their children and wives have to be shouldered by surviving family members whether young or aged. To us, this was entirely avoidable and therefore, highly condemnable.

From what has been witnessed in the theatre of the prevailing guerilla attacks and the keen observation of our coalition members, it is very obvious that the victims are not in doubt as to who their killers are. Indeed, they are of the fulani’s stock and therefore, we cannot subscribe to the misleading charade of unknown gunmen. In addition, the spade, timing and precision of operations couple with the feeble response the plight of victims received is highly suggestive of collusion. The truth is that, the lives and circumstances of the victims of these killings and attacks are treated as of second-class value in Nigeria and this is totally unacceptable, unconstitutional and repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience.

Therefore, the Coalition of the afforementioned blocks of Plateau Youth have resolved as follows;

1: That operatives of Operation Safe Haven should desist from ironical and wrongful arrest of victims rather than offenders as in the case of Kuru Station of Wereng in Riyom LGA, where two people were wrongfully arrested having themselves suffered crops destruction by the Fulani Hearders.

2: That all State actors who are charged with the statutory responsibility of guaranteeing the security of lives and properties to rise up to the call of their duty without compromise, fear or favour and forestall any further loss of life and property in and around the general area.

3; That all Villages and Hamlets should initiate immediate measures that would guarantee the security of their lives and properties, and work in synergy with neighboring Communities in order to contend the Fulani onslaughts.

4; That Mr. Jatau Yakubu Kachai of Kuru station in Riyom LGA who was wrongfully arrested and continuously detained by Operation Safe Haven at it’s headquarters in Jos be immediately released unconditionally.

5; That the Operation Safe Haven-OPSH has been complaisant and has compromised on several occasions and therefore, should be substituted with the Mobile Police squadron in all the affected areas given their proactive and more effective response to distress calls.

6; That the personnel of Operation Rainbow in Plateau State should be activated and deployed accordingly.

7; That Plateau State Government, should as a matter of urgency, inaugurate the taskforce on anti-land grabbing law of the state to enforce compliance.

8; That the State Security Council should take immediate measures against the influx of armed Fulanis who have infiltrated the State and now in places such as Shonong and Bangai in Bachi District, Ranku(Mahanga), Guava and Fass in Jol of Riyom LGA, Josho in Daffo District of Bokkos LGA to continue the attacks.

9; That the State House of Assembly should expedite legislative action to pass the Anti-Open Grazing Law of Plateau State, which shall inter alia, restrict cattle from roaming around, and hopefully check the influx of alien Fulani herders.

10; That the action taken by these leaderships is entirely apolitical and purely in the defense of the people of Plateau. Politicians are, therefore, strongly warned to, in their best interest, strer clear and never attempt to take advantage, or jeopardize this effort and process

11;That failure of the appropriate authorities to comply with the demands of the Coalition, Plateau Youths will be left with no option than resort to self help

Conclusively, we wish to sympathize with the families of all those who have lost their loved ones in the cause of the dastardly act and pray for the repose of all the departed souls. We also pray for quick recovery for those that sustained different degrees of injuries with every assurance that we are with them at this painful moment and we shall stand STRONGLY with them in defense of our land. We are calling on the government, NGO’s and spirited individuals to come to the aid of the injured persons who are receiving treatment in different hospitals.

God bless Plateau State!

10TH NASS SPEAKERSHIP: KADUNA MEMBER-ELECT MAKES CASE FOR YUSUF ADAMU GAGDI

A member-elect from Kaduna State (Kachia/Kagarko), David Umar, has called for support for the election of a young lawmaker as speaker of the incoming 10th National Assembly, narrowing his choice down to Yusuf Gagdi

Umar, who made the call in Abuja, contended that Nigeria’s young people represented the present and future Nigeria, but noted that the demographics of political leadership in the country do not represent this reality.

He stated: “Both government and the political parties do not reflect this reality. That has to change. And this change should begin in the House of Representatives.

“What is the part of the youths in the political leadership calculation? Where is the place of the youths in our democracy? Is it only as legislative and media aides?”

Umar said majority of 10th National Assembly members fall below the age of 50, meaning that to maintain a conflict-free House, a young leader that could relate with the younger generation of lawmakers-elect must be elected as speaker.

“It is essential to note that this contingent of members-elect is the youngest ever. The possibility of intergenerational conflict is high if the leadership of the House doesn’t reflect this in the composition of the House,” he stressed.

The Rep-elect, therefore, urged other members-elect and the All Progressives Congress, APC, to support Yusuf Gagdi to become the next speaker, saying he was not only in the youthful bracket as a 42 year-old but also had cognate experience in legislative business.

Umar said the argument that other lawmakers were more experienced than Gagdi in parliamentary business, because he was going for his second term, was not tenable, having surpassed them in legislative functions.

to water and many more. He has worked to improve the human capital quotient of his constituency and state. These are verifiable facts.

“Experience is not about years spent in parliament without results; it is about having the knowledge of how to use your office to better the lives of Nigerians as Gagdi has done,” he said.

GAGDI: THE MACHINES HAVE NOT STOPPED WORKING DESPITE OTHER PRESSING ENGAGEMENTS

GAGDI: THE MACHINES HAVE NOT STOPPED WORKING DESPITE OTHER PRESSING ENGAGEMENTS

For those who know what their representatives have accomplished for the good of the people in their communities, they may have stories to tell.

For some, it may be story of regrets, yet for others, they are daily pouring encomiums about their performances in various communities.

Despite winning his election for a second term, many are surprised that the people’s representative and top contender for the office of Speaker, Rt Hon Yusuf Adamu Gagdi has not slowed down in providing first-class projects for Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam federal constituency.

Only last week, the last bach of his intervention in the area of the provision of potable water was the digging of boreholes in far flung Munbutbo communities of Kanam LGA. This means all the area has been covered.

So far, 165 have been drilled, 165
Installed 16 motorized boreholes,
installed 121 hand pump boreholes
totalling 137

Work is resuming immediately after the Sallah break while workers will proceed to Kanke LGA by next week to continue there.

In a similar development, the Pankshin Youth Center Road contruction which was started before the 2023 elections has been completed. Wha is primary in his case is that, he does not start project and it is abandoned.

For now, what is on the burner is, he has presented himself to Nigeria for the contest for the coveted seat as Speaker, House of Representatives.

Rt Hon Yusuf Adamu Gagdi has continued to receive support and recommendations from individuals, groups, governments and his party.

ONE NATION, FORWARD TOGETHER___Written by Yusuf Adamu Gagdi

ONE NATION, FORWARD TOGETHER

by Rt. Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi

In a few weeks, the members-elect of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will convene to elect a Speaker who will preside over the tenth session of the House. By the grace of Allah, I intend to stand in that election for Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives.

I am offering myself for this position because, more than at any other time in our history, the choices we make now, the policies we prioritise and the concerns that determine our governing decisions will have serious long-term consequences either for good or for ill. The House of Representatives should be and will be the arena for many of those decisions. Therefore, we must have a leadership that recognises the importance of the moment and will rise to the occasion as it demands.

A nation’s journey is never complete. Each generation is responsible for taking up from their predecessors, correcting their mistakes and building on past gains. It also falls to each new generation to try to resolve the unsettled questions and atone for the original sins that stand in the way of progress. For us in Nigeria, the great unresolved question that continues to unsettle our republic, that stands in the way of us reaching for the stars, is this – what does it mean to be a Nigerian?

For the tenth National Assembly, beyond considerations of appropriations and bills, motions and resolutions, our highest obligation will be to provide the arena necessary for the impassioned yet civil debates and constructive engagements required to answer this fundamental question. The answer to this question is the missing piece that has eluded us for as long as this nation has existed.

This unanswered question continues to stand in the way of consensus on basic issues of nation-building, turning every disagreement into a conflict and every conflict into a war of attrition.

Even as we seek to answer the fundamental question of who we are and who we hope to be. We cannot lose sight of the real and present governance challenges that need to be addressed quickly, with intelligence and empathy. We have one of the world’s largest populations of young people, and there aren’t enough jobs available to pay them a good living and give them a sense of self-worth. Millions of our young people cannot conceive a future for themselves in the country of their birth, and they are rightly outraged. Those who can, are leaving. Others remain here, angry fodder for the fire next time.

What we need now in Nigeria is a wholesale, coordinated and sustained effort to change how we govern ourselves, a radical reassessment of how we allocate public resources and prioritise government interventions. We need to find the courage to make the difficult choices we have for too long deferred and prepare ourselves for the disruption of transformational change. Please make no mistake; transformational change is exactly what we need now. The incrementalist approach that has left us dealing with issues others have long ago solved, trailing our peers in every index, and competing with those who once looked up to us will no longer suffice. However, the simple truth remains that we cannot solve these problems unless we solve them together.

The tenth House of Representatives can be the engine room of innovation and transformative governance. It can be a legislature that reflects the best possibilities of our nationhood, a place where men and women who believe in the worthy cause of Nigeria can, with character and courage, wisdom and humility, confront our most significant national challenges. For that to happen, the House must first confront its failings and address its dysfunctions. We must manage the legislative calendar better to give room for constructive debate and deliberate consideration of critical policy issues. It is a waste of talent and a failure of imagination not to embrace the diversity of voices, perspectives, and experiences of members of the House of Representatives.

Not all governance challenges can be fixed by establishing a new agency or instituting a new, unenforceable ban. We must be willing to embrace complexity when making decisions about complex public policy issues. Legislators must recognise the limits of our abilities and consciously engage sectoral expertise to guide legislative decision-making and elevate the quality of legislative interventions and output. These proposals for internal reforms and recommended policy priorities for the 10th House of Representatives are articulated in the manifesto I will present to the public on the 6th of May, 2023.

Fellow Nigerians, I refuse to accept the cynical view that Nigeria’s best days are behind her. I reject the formulation of thought that all we can do now is superintend the managed decline of this great nation. We must not be bound to the idea that our problems are too big or that our diversity can only lead to conflict, strife, and stagnation. Our story can be that we built a nation from the sum of our parts. That out of many, we became one prosperous nation nourished by the varied cultures, histories, religions, and traditions of the diverse people who call this place home. All the possibilities exist within us to move this nation forward together. I am running for Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives because I believe in the possibilities of Nigeria. I ask you to believe with me.

God bless you, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

  • Gagdi is a Member of the House of Representatives.
