The event, aligned with the Nigeria Improved Charter for the Development of Human Capital (MPA), brought together key figures from government, healthcare agencies, and development partners.

NORTH EAST TOWN HALL MEETING STRESSES UNITY, LEADERSHIP AND DEMOCRATIC RESPONSIBILITY

By Freelance Reporters, Jos

Otunba Segun Showunmi, the convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as “The Alternative,” has called for a renewed commitment to national unity and democratic engagement in Nigeria. Speaking at the North East Town Hall meeting in Bauchi on Thursday, December 12, 2024, Showunmi emphasized the need for a united Nigeria and the active participation of citizens in the democratic process.

“It is the responsibility of the authorities to provide platforms that enable citizens to serve better,” he said. “The attitude that makes Nigeria seem like it is not one country has to go. This nation is one, and there is enough evidence to prove that. From our culture to our traditions, the similarities outweigh the differences. Even language, which some consider a dividing factor, is only a means of communication. We must reject division and celebrate our unity as Nigerians.”

Showunmi’s remarks set the tone for the town hall meeting, which focused on engaging Nigerians in conversations about democracy, governance, and national development. He stressed the need for citizens to take ownership of the democratic process, citing declining voter turnout as a worrying trend.

“In 2023, despite 93 million registered voters and collected PVCs, only 8 million votes were enough to install the president. This is a stark reminder that many Nigerians are not exercising their civic responsibilities. This disengagement, coupled with vote buying and selling, erodes the promise of democracy,” he noted.

Showunmi highlighted the urgent need for a shift in how Nigerians approach governance and leadership. He called for a “different way of thinking, behaving, and holding leaders accountable,” urging citizens to focus on finding solutions rather than merely complaining.

“This is not about political parties,” he clarified. “While I am a member of the PDP, this movement is about the people and the need for collective action. We must educate and sensitise ourselves, hold meaningful conversations, and rebuild trust in the democratic system.”

Hajiya Maimuna Ahmed of the National Women PDP Northern Awareness Forum commended the initiative, highlighting its inclusivity and the importance of engaging Nigerians without focusing on political affiliations.

“This engagement isn’t about partisan politics but about capturing the voice of all Nigerians,” she said. “I also call on women to actively participate in such initiatives geared toward nation-building. Women have a crucial role to play in shaping the future of this country.”

Hon. Usman Kafa, a former member of the Gombe State House of Assembly, also addressed the gathering, stressing the importance of leadership and developmental issues.

“We must voice our concerns about developmental challenges, especially leadership,” he said. “This is not the time to exchange votes for foodstuffs. The North East must rise above such politics and advocate for good leadership that prioritizes the people’s welfare. Political awareness must grow in our region, and we must all join our thoughts and efforts to build the nation.”

The Bauchi event was part of a series of zonal town hall meetings organized by NOMC to foster dialogue and collaboration across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Showunmi praised the Governor of Bauchi State for his support and highlighted the inclusiveness of the gathering, which drew participants from across the North East.

“The hospitality and infrastructure renewal in Bauchi are commendable,” he said. “This initiative isn’t about government but about Nigerians coming together to chart a better future. We’ve completed sessions in the North Central and North East. Next, we’ll head to Kano for the North West meeting and then move to the southern zones.”

Describing democracy as the “greatest hope for the poor,” Showunmi called on Nigerians to reclaim their political power through informed and active participation.

“If democracy is to work, every citizen must understand their role and rights. The power of one vote can transform lives and elevate communities. We cannot afford to remain passive or sell our future for temporary gains,” he said.

Showunmi, a seasoned political strategist and former spokesperson to Vice President Atiku Abubakar, reiterated his commitment to fostering a united Nigeria. He urged Nigerians to embrace dialogue, unity, and a renewed sense of responsibility, warning against the dangers of tribalism and political apathy.

The National Opposition Movement Coalition, through its Alternative initiative, aims to create a platform for Nigerians to discuss and address critical national issues, ultimately ensuring that democracy delivers on its promise of inclusion, progress, and shared prosperity

FOUR NSCDC OFFICERS KILLED IN BOKO HARAM AMBUSH, ONE MISSING

Four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been confirmed dead following an ambush by Boko Haram insurgents during an inspection tour of the national grid installations in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State on November 18, 2024.

The attack, which occurred near the boundary between Niger and Kaduna states, also left one officer missing, while two others returned to base unharmed.

The NSCDC spokesperson, Babawale Afolabi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

“Recall that seven personnel of the Corps’ Special Squad drawn from the National headquarters, FCT and Kaduna State Command respectively were declared missing in action when they were ambushed in boundaries between Niger and Kaduna states by the Boko Haram insurgents during an inspection tour of the National Grid Installation.

“As of today, out of the seven missing officers, four dead bodies had been recovered; two men returned back to base unhurt while one personnel is still missing in action,” Afolabi said.

According to the statement, the NSCDC Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Audi, extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed solidarity with the injured officers.

Visiting the wounded personnel at a medical facility on Thursday, Audi commended their bravery and assured them of the Corps’ unwavering support, including full coverage of medical expenses and other welfare needs.

Audi described the incident as a tragic loss and condemned the terrorist attack, highlighting the risks officers face in their duties.

He noted the exceptional courage displayed by the personnel in defending national assets and directed immediate financial and logistical support to ensure the injured received proper care.

He also pledged to expedite insurance benefits for the affected families.

As investigations continue into the ambush, Audi urged members of the Corps to remain vigilant and undeterred by the loss.

He called on the public to support the Corps and other security agencies in their efforts to combat insecurity and protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

“The personnel demonstrated an unwavering determination and commitment to the service of their fatherland; hence, they deserve all the support they can get from the organisation and the government they swore allegiance to.

The visit was necessary to know how they are fairing and to encourage those directly affected and all personnel at large that the leadership of the Corps places a very high premium on their welfare and will never abandon them, especially in a situation like this,” he added.

The attack occurred on November 18 in the Farin-Kasa area of Chukun Local Government Area, Kaduna State.

The team, consisting of nine officers and 71 other ranks from various NSCDC commands, had completed surveillance activities in Shiroro and was en route to their base when they were attacked.

The ambush came as the team escorted stranded expatriates, found in the bush around Dagwachi Village, who were returning from a mining site.

Over 200 heavily armed insurgents reportedly attacked the convoy from the top of a hill, opening fire with sophisticated weapons.

Despite being outnumbered, the NSCDC operatives successfully repelled the attack, neutralising more than 50 insurgents during the crossfire.
